SEMI DAILY THOUGHT
October 10, 2026
Online writers are always asked what advice we would give ourselves when we were starting out. JFC, that was 20 years ago. As a writer, I always give the same answer. There are two things I'd tell myself.
The first thing is, grow a thick skin. Despite what they want you to believe, editors aren't always right, and reviewers can be inevitably cruel. You can try to ignore them, but their words can cut deep. So grow a thick skin, like a rhino. Be a rhino with a keyboard. Remember, no one gets to tell you what and how to create.
My second piece of advice is to ignore 98% of all reviews. I've seen a hell of a lot of mean reviews, and received more than a fair share myself. And reviews of books where the reviewer says they're not a fan of the genre. Or how about reviewers who tank books because of a bad book cover, or the choice of font, but not the contents of the work? Almost all reviews are made by purchasers who are just customers without the intent of the professional full-time reviewer. Oh, and a third piece of advice for the road. Just have fun. Creation is supposed to be fun.
As the King said.
“Writing isn’t about making money, getting famous, getting dates, getting laid, or making friends. In the end, it’s about enriching the lives of those who will read your work, and enriching your own life, as well. It's about getting up, getting well, and getting over. Getting happy, okay? Getting happy.” – Stephen King
