We all know where we were when the towers came down.

It happened 25 years ago. But we'll never forget the details of that day.

Every year, people tell their story of where they were and what they were doing when the towers came down. I got tired of it. For the last few years, I've abstained from the storytelling.

It's not that the incident didn't affect me. Quite the contrary. I was as scarred as any American by what happened in New York that day.

I stopped because what came after, for me, was so much worse.

I was at work the morning it happened.

I worked for the City in the Department of Buildings and Grounds Maintenance, and we'd just finished the first part of our shift, and we were heading out to get some breakfast. We stopped by the reception desk at the main building just after the first plane hit.

We stood there watching in disbelief for, gods, I can't remember how long, until the second plane hit. I watched that live. We were shocked. We were horrified. We couldn't believe what our eyes were telling us.

We ended up never getting that breakfast.

Instead, we went back up to our offices, sat in front of the TV, and watched the entire day.

Nobody ever told us to get to work.

Nobody ever told us to clock out.

Nobody ever pointed out that over 20 people got paid to do nothing that day. It was horrific.

But as I said, what came after was worse.

For the next few months, I watched as America whipped itself into a frenzy. We willingly gave up our rights in the name of homeland Security. The upper class, the billionaires, and powerful people took the opportunity to start two wars that were more about grabbing minerals and oil and raping the value from other nations than they were about getting justice for what happened.

As they did that, they kept pumping the American public full of fear and hatred.

We turned on our non white non Christian brothers and sisters. This led, in the end, to the rise of Donald Trump.

I could make all the connections for you and show you, in stark detail, how this happened. But if you lived through it, you already know, or you're being willfully ignorant.

America is now a broken nation full of scared and angry people.

I hate to say it, but now the Republic is all but dead.

We've been watching helplessly as our rights and freedoms are stripped away by a group of billionaires and hate mongers. They would rather see us culled from The Earth than be allowed to expand and grow.

The ones who perpetrated the attacks on 9/11 had one goal. They wanted America destroyed. They hated us and our way of life.

In the end, it looks like they're going to get what they wanted.

In the end, the terrorists won.
