Day 25 - A Christmas Story (1983)
We all know evil Santa Claus’s popular refrain, “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid!” Bob Clark’s A Christmas Story may be the most famous Christmas movie in America. Fun fact, Bib Clark directed the most famous horror Christmas movie, too, the original Black Christmas.
This is the story of Ralphie, the oldest of two children growing up in Depression Era Cleveland. Ralphie is a good kid. He keeps his nose clean and does his best to respect and love his parents. Even his grumpy father, the “old man.” Ralphie has a singular objective for Christmas.
He wants a Red Ryder BB Gun with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time.
Through direct and subtle means, Ralphie tries his best to influence his parents' choice of presents, always failing to get his point across. Finally, after encountering the Evil Santa, beating up the school bully, and saying the F-Word in front of his father, encountering the glow of electric sex,
Christmas morning arrives in all of its snowy glory. Just when it seems the only significant present is a pink bunny onesie made by his aunt, Ralphie’s father surprises him with the Red Ryder BB gun. With which Ralphie almost shoots his own eye out, saved only by his glasses.
Then the family has Christmas dinner at a Chinese restaurant.
And a good time was had by all.
And remember, kids, be sure to drink your Ovaltine!
